Buyer's Guide

Guide to Hiring a Concrete Contractor

A plain-English guide to choosing the right type, finish, and contractor for your project.

Step 1: Know What You Need

Before you call a single contractor, get clear on your project:

  • What will the concrete be used for? (Driveway, patio, foundation, slab, walkway)
  • What finish do you want? (Standard broom, stamped, colored, exposed aggregate)
  • What's your approximate budget? (See our Cost Guide for ranges)
  • When do you need it done? (Most projects book 1-3 weeks out)

Step 2: Choose the Right Finish

Broom Finish (Standard)

The workhorse. Non-slip, durable, and the most affordable option. Best for driveways, sidewalks, and utility slabs.

Stamped Concrete

Mimics natural stone, brick, or tile at a fraction of the cost. Best for patios, pool decks, and entries.

Colored Concrete

Integral color mixed into the concrete or applied to the surface. Can be combined with stamping.

Exposed Aggregate

Surface is washed to reveal the natural stone aggregate. Decorative and non-slip.

Step 3: Vet Your Contractor

Get at least 2-3 written quotes. For each contractor, verify:

  • Active contractor's license (check CSLB.ca.gov)
  • Proof of liability insurance and workers' comp
  • Written all-inclusive quote (not a verbal estimate)
  • Written start date and timeline
  • Real reviews from local homeowners (Google, Yelp)
  • Willingness to pull permits

Step 4: Understand Your Quote

A good quote itemizes everything: demolition, excavation, base preparation, rebar, concrete materials, labor, finishing, permits, and cleanup. If a quote is a single line item ("Driveway — $5,000"), ask for a breakdown. Hidden costs live in vague quotes.

Sacramento-Specific Considerations

Sacramento's hot summers mean concrete cures fast — which is good for your timeline but requires experienced crews who know how to manage the pour in heat. Some areas (particularly parts of Citrus Heights and Fair Oaks) have expansive clay soil that requires additional base preparation. A good contractor will adjust their approach based on your specific soil conditions.
